Pakistan’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, Ambassador Mohammad Sadiq, met with Afghan Foreign Minister Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi in Kabul on Saturday. The meeting focused on strengthening the bilateral relationship between the two countries.

Both sides emphasized the importance of increased high-level engagements and dialogue to further solidify ties. Ambassador Sadiq, via a statement on X (formerly Twitter), reaffirmed Pakistan’s dedication to ongoing engagement and mutually beneficial relations with Afghanistan.

Afghan media reported that Foreign Minister Muttaqi highlighted the negative impacts of trade and transit obstacles, stressing that unrelated issues should not be intertwined. The meeting also addressed the gradual and respectful return of Afghan refugees.

The Pakistani envoy reportedly stated that ensuring security in Afghanistan is beneficial for both Pakistan and the wider region. He also pledged to streamline the visa process for Afghan citizens.

In addition to meeting with Foreign Minister Muttaqi, Ambassador Sadiq also held talks with Acting Afghan Minister for Industry and Commerce, Nooruddin Azizi. These discussions centered on bilateral trade, economic relations, and cooperation in transit and connectivity. Both parties agreed to explore the full potential of regional trade and connectivity for mutual gain.

Ambassador Sadiq’s visit was directed by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar.

The meetings come at a time when Pakistan has expressed serious concerns about terrorist organizations operating from within Afghanistan. Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN), Ambassador Munir Akram, recently addressed the UN Security Council, stating that the Afghan interim government has not adequately addressed the threat posed by groups like Al-Qaida, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), and the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA). Akram specifically pointed to the TTP, noting that the 6,000-strong militant group launches attacks on Pakistan from safe havens along the Afghan border.
