Karachi: Water Tanker Kills Pregnant Woman, Husband on Way to Hospital; Traffic Deaths Surge

**Karachi: Pregnant Woman, Husband Die as Water Tanker Runs Over Motorcycle**

A devastating tragedy struck Karachi when a pregnant woman and her husband were killed after a heavy water tanker struck their motorcycle near Malir halt. The couple was reportedly en route to the hospital for the woman’s delivery when the accident occurred.

Rescue sources confirmed that despite being rushed to the hospital, the woman, her unborn child, and her husband all succumbed to their injuries.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Korangi stated that the driver and helper of the water tanker have been taken into custody, and an FIR (First Information Report) will be filed against them.

This incident highlights a growing concern in Karachi: a sharp increase in traffic accidents. Rescue services report that 107 lives were lost in the first 45 days of 2025 alone, including 78 men, 14 women, 11 children, and 4 girls. In addition to fatalities, at least 1493 citizens were injured.

Traffic police data indicates that heavy vehicles, such as dumpers, trailers, and oil tankers, are frequently involved in these accidents. In January and the first six days of February, 32 accidents involved heavy traffic.

Authorities are taking action in response to this alarming trend. The traffic police have issued 34,655 challans, arrested 490 drivers, and cancelled 532 vehicle fitness certificates.

A four-member committee has also been established to investigate the root causes of these accidents and recommend measures to enhance road safety. The committee will focus on reviewing the fitness certificates of oil tankers, dumpers, and water tankers, as well as the licenses of their drivers.

In recent days, several cargo vehicles and water tankers were set ablaze by unidentified individuals in Karachi’s Landhi, Korangi, Al-Karam, and Surjani Town areas, seemingly in response to the ongoing traffic accidents.
