The Pakistan Navy reached a new milestone in strengthening its maritime defense capabilities with the launch of the second Hangor-class submarine, PNS/M SHUSHUK (Desig). The ceremony took place at the Shuangliu Base of Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Group Company Ltd in Wuhan, China, with Vice Admiral Ovais Ahmed Bilgrami, Vice Chief of the Naval Staff, attending as the Chief Guest.

In his address, Vice Admiral Bilgrami underscored the vital importance of maritime security in the current regional geo-strategic landscape. He reiterated the Pakistan Navy’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding national interests and promoting a secure maritime environment.

He highlighted that the second Hangor-class submarine, boasting advanced weaponry and cutting-edge sensors, will play a crucial role in maintaining the region’s balance of power and maritime order.

Expressing appreciation for China Shipbuilding & Offshore International Company Ltd (CSOC), the Vice Chief of the Naval Staff praised the project’s advancements and emphasized its contribution to the strong Pakistan-China relationship.

The Hangor-class submarine is designed with state-of-the-art features, including air-independent propulsion systems, heavyweight torpedoes, and anti-ship cruise missiles. These capabilities allow the submarines to perform anti-access/area denial operations and engage targets at long ranges. These submarines are set to significantly enhance Pakistan’s maritime security and contribute to regional stability.

The acquisition of eight Hangor-class submarines was agreed upon between the Government of Pakistan and CSOC during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Pakistan.

Under the agreement, four submarines will be built in China, and the other four will be constructed in Pakistan at Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works Ltd (KS&EW) under a Transfer of Technology (ToT) program. These submarines will feature advanced weaponry and sensor technology, making them capable of neutralizing targets from significant distances.

The launch ceremony was attended by high-ranking officials from both Pakistan and China, including representatives from Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Group Company Ltd and CSOC.
