**Pakistan’s Trade Deficit Over the Last Five Years: A Closer Look**

The Pakistani government recently disclosed details of the country’s trade deficit over the past five years in the National Assembly. The figures, shared by the Ministry of Commerce, paint a picture of Pakistan’s import and export trends.

Over the five-year period, Pakistan faced a cumulative trade deficit of $154 billion. Here’s a breakdown of the trade deficit for each fiscal year (FY):

* **FY 2020:** $23.16 billion
* **FY 2021:** $31.08 billion
* **FY 2022:** $48.35 billion
* **FY 2023:** $27.47 billion
* **FY 2024:** $24.11 billion

During the same period, Pakistan’s total exports amounted to $136 billion, while imports reached $291 billion.

The Ministry of Commerce attributed the surge in imports to economic growth. Specific sectors experienced significant increases in imports:

* Solar panels, transformers, and power transmission equipment imports surged by 60% in 2025, reaching $319 million.
* Industrial machinery imports rose by 20%.
* Textile machinery imports increased by 40%.
* Auto parts imports saw a 58% increase.
