Pakistan’s electricity production has hit a five-year low, measured year-on-year, despite government support and a winter relief package.

According to the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA), the country generated 6.495 billion units of electricity in February 2025. This represents a significant drop compared to previous years: 7.137 billion units in February 2024, 7.756 billion units in February 2023, 8.087 billion units in February 2022, 7.281 billion units in February 2021, and over 7 billion units in February 2020.

The CPPA data also reveals a decrease in the amount of electricity distributed to companies. Distribution companies (Discos) received 6.876 billion units in February 2024, down from 7.516 billion units in February 2023. Previous years also saw higher distribution figures: 7.774 billion units (February 2022), 6.996 billion units (February 2021), and 6.756 billion units (February 2020).

Sources attribute this decline in electricity production to two main factors: reduced economic activity leading to lower industrial electricity consumption, and the increasing adoption of solar power as a response to high electricity costs.

The drop in production comes despite a “Bijli Sahulat Package” announced by the government.
