Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, announced Friday that Starlink has been granted temporary registration in Pakistan, fulfilling a directive from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

In a statement, the minister confirmed that Starlink received a temporary No Objection Certificate (NOC) after gaining consensus from all security and regulatory bodies.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) will be responsible for ensuring Starlink complies with fee payments and other licensing obligations.

Minister Khawaja emphasized that Pakistan is undergoing significant digital transformation under Prime Minister Sharif’s leadership. “The Prime Minister has directed comprehensive reforms to enhance Pakistan’s internet infrastructure, and Starlink’s registration is a major step forward in this journey,” she stated.

Hailing the approval of satellite-based internet services as a “milestone,” the minister noted, “Modern solutions like satellite internet will greatly enhance connectivity, particularly in underserved and remote areas of the country.”

The government pursued a “whole-of-government” approach, working closely with all relevant institutions, including cybercrime and security agencies, the PTA, and the Space Authority, to streamline Starlink’s registration.

Minister Khawaja expressed optimism that Starlink’s entry into Pakistan would mark the official launch of satellite internet services, ushering in a new era of digital connectivity and helping to bridge the digital divide.

This development follows earlier reports that SpaceX chief Elon Musk was awaiting government approval for Starlink’s launch in Pakistan. The news originated from a conversation on X (formerly Twitter) between Pakistani social media user Sanam Jamali and Musk, where Jamali requested the introduction of Starlink, highlighting its potential to improve internet access and create opportunities. Musk responded that he was waiting for the Pakistani government’s green light. Starlink, a SpaceX project, delivers internet services via a large network of satellites.
