TikTok’s New “Security Checkup”: Easily Boost Your Account Protection

Despite ongoing questions about its future, particularly in the US, TikTok is stepping up its security game. The platform has just launched “Security Checkup,” a new, centralized control panel designed to help users better protect their accounts.

You can find it within the app by going to “Settings and Privacy” and then “Security & permissions.” This new feature consolidates key security settings into one convenient location. This makes it incredibly simple for TikTok users to link a phone number and email for backup login options, enable two-factor authentication (2FA), set up passkeys, and even activate biometric login methods like facial recognition – all from a single dashboard, eliminating the need to hunt down individual settings.

Here’s a visual of what it looks like:

The Security Checkup dashboard also gives you a clear overview of all devices currently logged into your account. If you spot any unfamiliar or unwanted devices, you can easily revoke their access directly from this list. TikTok will also flag any unusual activity on your account, prompting you to review potential security breaches.

While this feature is similar to security checkups already offered by other social media platforms (Instagram launched its own version almost four years ago), it’s a welcome addition that will undoubtedly improve the security posture of many TikTok accounts.

Beyond the Security Checkup, TikTok is also taking steps to combat scams. The platform now displays educational banners when users search for specific terms and topics that are frequently linked to fraudulent activity.

For example, if you search for the hashtag “#FinTok,” you’ll now see a banner at the top of the search results that reads, “Before following any financial advice, keep in mind that all investments involve risks and consider doing your own research.” This proactive approach aims to educate users and help them avoid falling victim to potential scams.
