The Torkham border crossing between Pakistan and Afghanistan is scheduled to reopen today, Wednesday, March 19, 2025, following a 25-day closure, according to reports from ARY News.

The decision to reopen the border was reached during a high-level flag meeting between Pakistani and Afghan officials.

Under the agreement, all trade activities will resume at the Torkham border starting from 4 PM today. Patients will also be permitted to cross, and pedestrian movement will begin on Friday.

The reopening has been welcomed by traders, transporters, and travelers who were impacted by the closure.

The Torkham border had been closed due to a disagreement over the construction of a new checkpoint.

Pakistan and Afghanistan share 18 border crossings, with Torkham and Chaman being the most heavily used. These crossings connect Pakistan’s Balochistan province with Afghanistan’s Kandahar province.

Pakistan has experienced an increase in terrorist attacks since the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan in 2021.

In 2023, Interim Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani issued a demarche to the Afghan charge d’affaires following a terrorist attack on two military posts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Chitral district.
